How to Caramelize Onions

Lately, I have been reading a lot of discussion around caramelized onions. They are not same as saute onions, but similar.

The onions are cooked for long enough, sometimes with additional sugar, to bring out the rich sweet flavor of the onion. The time of cooking depends on the pan you are using and the intensity of flame. So let’s get started.

Ingredients
  • 2 medium onions, sliced
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp sugar, optional
  • 1 tsp vinegar, optional
Method
  1. In a wide pan, melt some butter and add oil
  2. Add the onions when the oil is hot enough and spread on the pan evenly
  3. Let it cook for about 10 minutes on medium low, stirring occasionally
  4. The key is let the onions turn brown, so do not stir too often.
  5. Keep the flame low, to avoid burning the onions.
  6. Add 1 tsp water if the onions stick to the pan.
  7. Add sugar and vinegar when the onions have turned golden
  8. Cook for another 5-7 minutes
  9. Remove from the flame and let cool
